Terminology / FAQ

What is Polystyrene?

Polystyrene is a versatile plastic used to make a wide variety of consumer products.

As a hard, solid plastic, it is often used in products that require clarity, such as food packaging and laboratory ware. When combined with various colorants, additives or other plastics, polystyrene is used to make appliances, electronics, automobile parts, toys, gardening pots and equipment and more.

Polystyrene also is made into a foam material, called expanded polystyrene (EPS) or extruded polystyrene (XPS), which is valued for its insulating and cushioning properties. Foam polystyrene can be more than 95 percent air and is widely used to make home and appliance insulation, lightweight protective packaging, surfboards, automobile parts, roadway and roadbank stabilization systems and more.

Polystyrene is made by stringing together, or polymerizing, styrene, a building-block chemical used in the manufacture of many products.

What is Styrofoam?

The word Styrofoam™ is often used to describe expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam; however, ‘Styrofoam’ is actually a trademarked term for closed-cell extruded polystyrene foam made for thermal insulation and craft applications.

What does EPS stand for in Foam?

Expanded polystyrene (EPS) is a lightweight and rigid foam material. It is a material of choice for the packaging and construction industry. It provides cost-effective solutions and energy-efficient insulation. It also acts as a cushion when transporting shock-sensitive goods.

What does XPS stand for in Foam ?

Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) is a high-performing, rigid foam insulation board. The closed-cell structure of the foam insulation boards keeps moisture out. The XPS insulation board comes in many grades for applications wherein resistance to heavy loads and extreme moisture is required.

Which is better, EPS or XPS?

XPS and EPS are both popular insulation types because they both have low thermal conductivity. EPS has pockets of air trapped inside the foam board, so XPS typically outperforms EPS.

What is Lagging on a Pipe?

Pipe Lagging refers to the process of insulating pipes using materials that reduce heat loss or gain, as well as minimize noise transmission. The insulation material, often called “pipe lagging,” wraps around the pipe to provide thermal and acoustic protection.

Definition of Recycling

Recycling is the process of collecting, processing, and reusing materials that would otherwise be discarded as waste. It involves converting used materials into new products to reduce environmental impact, conserve natural resources, and minimize landfill waste.

Is Polystyrene Recyclable?
Yes! Polystyrene is Recyclable ♻️Although polystyrene recycling is not as widespread as other materials, Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) is 100% recyclable and can be reprocessed into new products.
How is Polystyrene Recycled?

Grinding or Melting – EPS can be ground down or melted for reuse in various plastic processing industries.

  • Reused Up to 20 Times! – Polystyrene can be recycled up to 20 times without losing its physical properties.
  • Zero Waste – No scrap goes to waste! Polystyrene’s versatility ensures it can be repurposed efficiently.
